Kern Family – 2016 Park Rapids

Meet Rachelle and her two boys, Logan (10) and Dean (8).  This family will be the new homeowners of a Habitat for Humanity home bought back from a previous partner family. For Rachelle and her boys, having a safe and affordable place to live will be life changing. Rachelle says “Thank you for this once in a lifetime opportunity!!!   I’m so excited to begin this new chapter in mine and my boys life.”

Here’s her story:  (written by Rachelle Kern)

“My name is Rachelle Kern. I am 46 years old. I have a grown daughter Jessica and 2 sons Logan (11 years) and Dean (8 years). I have twin 9 month-old granddaughters. I grew up on a small farm in the Verndale, Mn. area. I was the 4th of 5 girls. All of us worked hard from the time we were little. The farm provided food for the table and supplemental income. My dad also drove trucks. We had the basics, but not much more. My father died when I was 13 years old. My mother single handedly raised the three remaining children in the home. My mother got a job as a school cook, and us girls continued to work the farm. I began working when I was 14 years old to earn money to buy my own school clothes. I have not been without a job since. I have been working at the Headwaters Animal Shelter since 2012. I worked my way up from a basic kennel worker position to a middle management position. I love animals and am proud to be able to make a difference in our community. Our residence and most of our possessions were lost in the Green Valley fire that swept through the area in May 2013.  The community, family and friends rallied around us and we were able to restart. One of my lifetime goals has been to own my own home. Owning will help me build my financial security over the years as I continue to raise my boys. I feel so blessed to be given a leg up towards that goal through your awesome program.”

We are so happy and excited to be welcoming Rachelle, Logan, and Dean HOME!  Donate today to help Rachelle and other families in your community who are in need of a safe and affordable place to call home.
